WEC 8/5/2007 Results (Rough Cut)

Email Article Print ArticleWell, the WEC fights were definitely fast. Only one went past the first round. Paulo didn’t disappoint and Carlos surprised everyone. Here is a rough cut of my notes. For a more detailed and polished version, see our review section.
WEC 8/5/2007
Jamie Varner vs. Sherron Leggett
R1
Both come out swinging
Jamie shoots in and gets a double leg slam and in side guard
Jamie Varner mounts and then tries for arm triangle and ends in half guard
Sherron gets up and stuffs a takedown
Jamie gets a fireman’s carry and slams sherron down on his shoulder
Jamie hits Sherron in the back of the head and gets a point deduction
Jamie sets him up with a right and goes for a head kick
Sherron goes for a guillotine but Jamie picks him up and slams Sherron and lands in side
Jamie gets mount easily
Sherron gives up his back and Jamie gets the hooks and then goes for a RNC but can’t get arm deep enough
Sherron spins again and gives up mount
Jamie throws some vicious elbows and causes Sherron to roll
Continues some vicious GNP and causes the ref to stop the match
Jamie Varner wins in the first round by TKO
Tiki vs. Blas Avena (WW)
R1
Blas shoots in and gets a body lock and a whizzer to a mount
Tiki gives up his back but gets out of RNC
Blas chokes it in tighter and gets a RNC with only one arm in
Blas wins by RNC in the first round
Jeff Curran vs. Stephen Ledbetter (145)
* Wow, Jeff Curran’s voice sounds like scratching a chalkboard
* 40 fights for Jeff Curran (30-8-1 = 39...)
* Ring Announcer screws up the decision announcement (lol)
R1
Jeff gets an inside leg kick
Stephen gets a nice body kick in off a hand flurry
Jeff gets a direct right shot that wobbles him and causes Stephen to rush in and clinch
Lots of knees inside from both
Jeff throws a massive hook from the clinch
Stephen gets the nice leg trip but nothing happening from full guard
Ref stands them up from inactivity
R2
Jeff throws a high kick and then a superman
Stephen rushes in and takes Jeff down again and can’t get anything going
Jeff is getting some nice shots in but eventually gets taken down by Stephen
Jeff gets the butterflys in and nothing is happening on the ground
Jeff creates distance with feet on hips and then gets up
Finally a separation, Jeff gets some nice kicks in
Stephen finally lands a nice hit
Neither is moving in the middle
Jeff gets a kick in and causes Stephen to shoot but Jeff sprawls
Stephen gets Jeff down and stuffs him in a corner
Jeff gets the triangle and cinches it in deep but the bell saves Stephen
R3
Both are very stationary in the center of the ring
Jeff throws a haymaker off a lead uppercut
Jeff lands 2 jabs nicely
both connect in the middle of the ring
Jeff gets a nice body kick in that drives back Stephen forcing him to shoot in
Jeff throws some nice short elbows from the bottom
uses his feet to get out from underneath
Jeff tries to shoot in but Stephen sprawls nicely and Stephen does a nice reverse
Jeff Curran gets a reverse triangle in
Both scrambling
Jeff ends up with a triangle
Jeff Curran wins by unanimous decision
Paulo Filho vs. Joe Doerksen
* Lol. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu vs. Canadian Jiu-Jitsu
R1
Joe comes out throwing nice strikes (kicks and punches)
Paulo tries for a single but Joe stuffs it
Paulo gets a single and the takedown off a mistake
Joe using rubber guard and transitions to Butterflys which leads to a sweep
Joe tries for an outside leg trip but Paulo uses masterful balance to stay up and almost reverse the sweep
Paulo rocks Joe by changing up his gameplan and lands 2 left hooks right to the kisser of Joe
Joe tries to grab on and hold the leg but Paulo keeps landing vicious unconventional hits
Big John stops the fight after Joe eats another wild hook
Paulo Filho wins by TKO
Carlos Condit vs. Brock Larson
R1
Very tentative in the middle of the ring
Brock shoots in and gets stuffed. gets the single and the slam and lands in side
Carlos gets a nice upkick through some GNP by Brock
High guard by Carlos and then gets an armbar try
Brock falls back into the armbar and Carlos transitions to the armbar throwing the leg over the face.
Steve Mazagati stops the fight and Brock wasn’t happy
Carlos Condit wins by arm bar in the first round
