There were two new champions crowned this last Saturday in the UFC at UFC 64. One by design, another by force.
Unfortunately I was not able to see the fights because my Father-in-law was retiring from Exxon after 29 yrs that night. (btw congratulations to him) The steakhouse that they held the event at didn’t do PPV events which is a whole ‘nother story in itself
Needless to say, I was crazily gleaning the blogs for any kind of information I could find.
For those of you who didn’t have the opportunity to watch, here was the blog that I was constantly hitting refresh on after the party. In the first title match of the evening lightweights Sean Sherk and Kenny Florian put up a spectacular performance. Sean Sherk, in the end, grounded out a five round victory and it pretty much went as I thought. He was too strong for KenFlo to handle yet Ken almost got what he wanted with his killer elbows. He cut him early.
Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin were the next title fight of the night and this didn’t go as expected. Anderson Silva utilized a nasty Muy Thai clinch to deliver monster knees to Rich Franklin which resulted in a TKO stoppage 3:58 into the first round. Rich Franklin ended up with a broken nose and got destroyed. I had expressed all along that Rich’s Kryptonite would be a patient highly technical fighter and Anderson Silva fit that bill to a Tee. I had predicted Rich in five rounds but I knew for Anderson to win, it would end early and nasty (which it did).
The rest of the bouts sounded great. Here was some of the news coverages from around the country that came on the Internet after the fight:
Houston Chronicle: Silva Rocks Franklin, Sherk Dominates at UFC 64
Washington Post: Silva Bags Quick UFC TKO of Franklin
