UFC Fighter Bonnar accused of Steroid Use

by: DarthMolen

MMAweekly.com reports that the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday filed a formal complaint against light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar, claiming the UFC 62 competitor tested positive for Boldenone, a banned anabolic agent commonly used by veterinarians to treat horses on the mend.

This steroid is not commonly used by athletes because trace amounts stay in the system months after usage. It also has a lot of nasty side effects that include hair loss, high blood pressure, elevated estrogen levels, flu-like symptoms, etc.

Bonnar was the Ultimate Fighter season one runner-up, and recently lost a unanimous decision to Forrest Griffin in UFC 62. He then allegedly tested positive in his post-fight urine sample. The battery of tests that they perform on one sample costs the commission about $243.

Bonnar has 20 days to respond to the complaint. If and when he does respond, he is entitled to appear in front of the commission with whatever representation that he wants to defend the sample and interview witnesses etc. The Commission will then determine what discipline is required. This can be a fine up to $250,000 (Bonnar only took in $16,000 as a purse prize for the fight) and also three to twelve months fighting suspension.

On another side note, Bonnar broke his right thumb in the fight and was on a six month fighting suspension already.
